How to spot signs and get rid of fleas

Your cat or dog appears to be in a couple of pains and is constantly scratching or biting their fur. Is it a skin disease or if it be fleas feeding? But what do fleas appear like? Before you are taking your pet to the vet, there are a few approaches to check if you have fleas inside the home:

  • Can you spot fleas crawling to your pet’s coat? They’re commonly reddish-brown and approximately 2mm long.
  • Assess the hindquarters of your dog or the head and neck of your cat. These are the regions that are targeted and where you could see signs of flea activity.
  • Carefully look at your pet’s skin for fine black droppings which looks like ground black pepper – use a flea comb over a sheet of white paper, to see small, black specks.
  • There’s flea dirt on pet bedding, carpets or rugs.

The soonest you spot the infestation, the better you can get rid of these nasty fleas. Our certified technicians know just what to do when it comes to getting rid of fleas and they have a maintenance solution to make the fleas unable to come back again.

They understand the habits of different flea species and can offer the most appropriate and effective solution for your specific flea issue.

Problems With Fleas?

In as much that pets are adorable, they can bring quite trouble most notably when they get fleas. They bring these creepy creatures unknowingly inside their homes. Once this pest gets inside, they begin to nestle and breed, infesting more than one area of your home and impose health risk to household members and pets.

Fleas are in fact a common pest problem in Australian homes. Even those with pets, homeowners can still experience the nuisance of these pests. It is not only our cats and dogs that can harbor fleas but also other hairy creatures like rabbits, rats, mice and livestock such as pigs.

As parasites, the greatest concern about the existence of fleas in your house or business comes from their bites. Although these are not painful, they can result in an uncomfortable itch or reactive rash. Your pets may also develop allergies to the flea saliva.

Adult fleas feed on mammal blood and can beverage 15 times their own weight daily. Their larvae feed from pet or human dandruff, discarded skin, hair, and some other organic debris they can find in your property. You may often find fleas comfortably snuggled in your pet’s fur. Their eggs can also spread throughout your entire property, infesting your bedding, furniture, and flooring. Larvae often lurk deep inside the carpet fabric or in handy hardwood flooring crevices.

Keeping You Home Flea Free

Here’s our to-do listing to help you maintain a flea-free home:

Before you do anything else, vacuum – carpets, furnishings, cracks in the floorboards and upholstered furniture. This will not only get rid of adult fleas, but also their eggs and larvae. The larvae feed on adult flea feces and other organic matter, which accumulate in things such as carpets and rugs. Eliminating this source of food is an important step in breaking the flea life cycle.

Empty your vacuum cleaner very carefully away from the home because the fleas will still be alive.

Groom your pets frequently with a flea comb and wash their beds every week (ideally at 50°c or above).

If your pet is scratching or biting its fur you should speak with your vet. They can recommend the best flea sprays or powders to use to take care of your pet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I empty my kitchen cupboards prior to your arrival?

We will apply a gel to these areas which are often home to cockroaches. We do not apply a liquid spray in these areas. You are free to leave your cupboards as they are.

What actions should I take prior to the arrival of my pest control expert?

We will need access to the room edges as it will be necessary that we spray the skirtings. We would require that you remove clothing articles, newspapers, children’s toys etc from the ground surfaces. Items of food will also need to be cleared from table tops and benches.

Can the spray cause any problems to humans?

The spray we use is often used in public places such as hospitals and schools and causes no ill effects to humans.
